Now an app for S.F. parking spaces

Parking in San Francisco? There’s an app for that.

The city today started a website offering “real-time parking availability and pricing information.”

There’s also an app for the iPhone and an open data stream for outside app developers.

“With SFpark, San Francisco is the first city in the world to pursue a comprehensive parking-based approach to congestion management and greenhouse gas emission reduction that will also support local merchants and keep San Francisco moving,” said Mayor Ed Lee.

San Francisco in coming months will also start using demand-based pricing for parking for some on-street parking spaces.

That means the city will adjust hourly rates based on demand “to find the lowest hourly rate possible”… “to achieve the right level of parking availability to make parking easier. Rates will be adjusted no more than once a month and only in small increments of no more than 50 cents per hour.”
