“From all accounts, Jobs prided himself as a canny observer, not only of business but also of human character, and he did not want to admit — especially to himself — that he had been betrayed by the two young men he had been attempting to mentor.”
— Excerpt from “In the Plex: How Google Thinks, Works, and Shapes Our Lives,” a new book written by Steven Levy, which includes a look at Apple CEO Steve Jobs‘ relationship with Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. The so-called betrayal was the development of Android as “a full-blown alternative to the iPhone.”
Among the touchy issues: Android’s pinch-to-zoom feature, which enraged Jobs after a visit to the Googleplex, according to the book. For those who care deeply about iOS vs. Android, former Engadget editor Nilay Patel blogs about the murkiness of the timeline of multitouch on Android.
Some numbers from the smartphone OS war: Last week, Gartner released a forecast that by the end of 2012, Android’s global market share will rise to 49 percent (from 38.5 percent in 2011), while iOS will fall to 18.9 percent from its projected 2011 market share of 19.4 percent.
But of course, iOS isn’t just in iPhones — it’s also in iPads, and Apple is tops in tablets: A separate Gartner report Monday projects a 68.7 percent market share worldwide for the iPad this year, compared with 19.9 percent for Android. But while Gartner expects the iPad’s market share to fall to 47.1 percent by 2015, the firm forecasts Android tablets will rise to 38.6 percent by then.
