Rumor: Sony on tap for 8-megapixel camera for iPhone 5?

According to the Wall Street Journal, Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer may be gearing up to build new cameras for some Apple products.

Here’s the WSJ, recounting a conversation Stinger had with Walt Mossberg:

Early on, he raised the irony of Sony supplying camera components for Apple devices. It “always puzzles me,” he said. “Why would I make Apple the best camera?”

It is unclear what devices he was talking about as Sony isn’t known to supply key camera components, known as image sensors, to Apple; A Sony spokeswoman declined to comment and an Apple spokesperson couldn’t be reached for comment.

9to5 Mac believes this has everything to do with the iPhone 5, which they claim will sport an 8-megapixel sensor by Sony. While Sony has never been a supplier of camera parts for Apple, the company surely wants to be able to ship future devices with better sensors in them. Currently, the iPhone 4 ships with a 5-megapixel camera that can shoot 720p video at 30 frames per second with audio.
