Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 Review For iPhone And iPad: We’ve Got Wood

The biggest improvement in this year’s version of Tiger Woods are by far the visuals. Although the game is not officially iPad 2 optimized, playing it on iPad the game looked great.

We thoroughly enjoyed the first Tiger Woods game for the iOS, so we’re excited to take a look at what changed in this new version of the game. Though still not at the console level yet in terms of graphics and gameplay experience, PGA Tour 12 has definitely raised the stakes.

Presentation

The game is also retina display optimized. Although the characters and the fly-by’s still look a bit basic at times, everything else has been greatly improved and just looks better overall. The one downside to the game I’d say is the commentary, which is down right awful and often just inaccurate. Otherwise this game made a huge leap in this category.

Controls

The controls are pretty much the same as with the previous game, which on the iPhone is a good thing. You can move where you plan to aim the ball by dragging left or right. When you’re ready to swing, simply tap the button in the middle to bring out the swing meter.

This has been here since the original release, and it’s probably the most intuitive way to swing on an iOS game. It works perfectly on iPhone, but on iPad it felt a bit more difficult unless you were had the iPad down on a surface. When holding in hand, the swing meter in the middle was a bit tricky, specially when trying to be precise.

Gameplay

The game features 8 golf courses, 5 of which are from the 2009 game. The include courses like Pebble Beach, Doral, etc. You can enter tournaments and earn prizes, which you use to buy better equipment and enter other tournaments.

This year’s game also adds a new mode, “Closest to the Pin” challenge. This will put you up against your Facebook friends to see who can get nearest to the pin on a hole. There’s also Tiger Challenge mode, in which you play several mini games for money. The game however is still limited to local multiplayer.

Suggestions

“Closes to the Pin” mode is a ton of fun, but not a lot of people play Tiger Woods on my personal Facebook, and I’m sure it’s the same on many others. Apart from that fact, many iOS gamers don’t have a Facebook. I think it’d be great if EA extended this mode to use Apple’s Game Center instead, for friend or auto-match making and even voice chat if they’d like.

Conclusion

In the end, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 sets itself apart from the competition with the controls, bringing the most realistic and accurate controls for an iOS golf game. This year’s version adds overall polish to the game, but the core gameplay is still the same.

The good news is if you’re not sure if you want to commit yet, there’s a free version to try that even allows you to play the “Closest to the Pin” mode. I’d definitely recommend the game if you want a golf game, and at the very least you should download the free version.
