Twitter Ditches the Dickbar

Twitter users active enough to have the official Twitter app on their iPhone will have noticed a new feature in the app over the last few weeks: a bar across the top of your stream of tweets that displays both advertisements and trending topics.

The QuickBar was quickly dubbed “the DickBar” by users who hated seeing trending topics and ads at the top of their twitter feed. Soon, there was a #dickbar hashtag, presumably in an attempt to have the QuickBar read #dickbar.

However, it seems Jack Dorsey’s first order of business as the head of product development at Twitter was to get rid of this ad-bar, which users had quickly dubbed “the Dickbar.” In a blog post Twitter’s Doug Bowman said the Quick-Bar was just an experiment; Twitter was trying out a new feature, and in the end, decided not to use it.

“After testing a feature and evaluating its merits, if we learn it doesn’t improve the user experience or serve our mission, we’ll remove that feature,” writes Doug.

“Rather than continue to make changes to the QuickBar as it exists, we removed the bar from the update appearing in the App Store today.”

However, the DickBar may not be gone forever, as Doug added, “We believe there are still significant benefits to increasing awareness of what’s happening outside the home timeline.”
