The mysterious white iPhone 4 is reportedly in production. The handset, which is already 10 months late if one compares it to its black counterpart, will arrive at a time when the whole tech world is in limbo over when the iPhone 5 will be unveiled and released.
Sources told Reuters that this means the handsets could start shipping in a month’s time, meaning it would be 11 months late. Hon Hai Precision Industry – a division of Foxconn – will be responsible for assembly of the white iPhone 4, one of the sources claimed.
The handset’s release schedule was dramatically delayed over a manufacturing problem Apple didn’t give details on. Ars Technica suggested it was perhaps a discoloration issue. At the time, they wrote: ‘Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs first unveiled the white version of the smartphone when the iPhone 4 was launched in June last year, but it has been delayed because of a manufacturing issue that the company has not elaborated on.’
As bizarre as it sounds, something as mundane as a colour change has been known to reignite sales of a consumer electronics device – just ask Nintendo with their multi-coloured handhelds. Perhaps Apple figures it may as well use this delayed release of their white handset to fill the void of not unveiling the iPhone 5 at WWDC.
Given Apple sold 16 million iPhones in Q4 2010, and this made up a third of the company’s total sales, to say they have momentum with their smartphone would be an understatement. Perhaps the white iPhone 4 can fill the product release void until we know what’s actually happening with the iPhone 5.
Are you still looking for the white smartphone, or have you moved on with the black iPhones already?
