Consumer electronics giant Apple can add Guinness world records to its various accolades the company’s App Store, iPhone 4 and even an app tied to its devices, the Angry Birds app, earned records in the Guinness World Records® 2011 Gamer’s Edition.
In a statement released by the record-recognizing body, it said that the Apple iPhone 4 is the “Fastest-Selling Portable Gaming System”.
“Analyst estimates place the first-day sales of the iPhone 4, released on June 24, 2010, at 1.5 million units, making it the fast-selling portable gaming device in history. For comparison, the PSP shifted 200,000 units on its launch date in 2005, and the DS took a week to move 500,000 consoles in November 2004,” it said.
Guinness World Records Gaming Editor Gaz Deaves said in a statement that, “The release of the iPhone has not just changed the mobile industry, but the video game world too.”
“With the never-ending App Store selection and an intuitive device, Apple has created a gigantic new space for itself in the casual games genre that literally brings entertainment to users wherever they may be,” he added.
The Apple App Store also snagged three impressive records namely: “Most Popular Application Marketplace,” “Largest Downloadable Video Game Store,” and “Largest Launch Line-up of Any Gaming System”.
Angry Birds, Plants vs. Zombies, and Tap Tap Revenge also earned the records “Top Paid-For App Store Game in Most Countries,” “Fastest-Selling iPhone/iPod Strategy Game,” and “Most Popular iPhone Game Series” respectively.
