CrimeStoppers solicits tips with iPhone app

Criminals in Atlanta be warned: There is now an app for that.

CrimeStoppers, the outfit that collects anonymous crime-fighting tips, is getting onto the iPhone.

The nonprofit program announced Wednesday that it has introduced a free application for the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Android devices.

Users could already submit tips anonymously with a traditional phone call, or by going online or sending a text message. Now, they can use smartphones to send tips, photos and video (with geo-tagging if desired) and to conduct private chats with law enforcement.

The application, TipSubmit Mobile, works across all cellphone networks.

“The mobile application adds a new component that makes it easier for the public to provide investigators with information essential to the apprehension of dangerous criminals,”  Miguel Sepulveda, director of Crime Stoppers Atlanta, said in a written statement. “The anonymous process allows people to come forward with critical tips without the fear of retribution.”

Those who want to learn more and to download the application can do so online.

Those who prefer a regular phone call can still reach the Crime Stoppers tip line at 404-577-TIPS (8477). They also can go online or they can send a text message to CRIMES (274637). The organization gives rewards of up to $2,000 to anonymous tipsters who help solve crimes.
