Apple gearing up to launch MacBook Air and iPhone 5

Apple is gearing up to launch the latest iterations of the MacBook Air and iPhone 5, as the company looks to push ahead in the laptop and smartphone markets.

The latest edition of the MacBook Air will be available at the end of June, and 380,000 units are expected to ship initially, according to Taiwan’s Economic Daily.

Specifications are unconfirmed, but the MacBook Air laptops are expected to incorporate chips based on Intel’s Sandy Bridge architecture and the revamped OS X Lion, which has 250 new features.

Interestingly, there are also widespread reports that the iPhone 5 and iPad 3 are on course to be released later this year.

A specific release date of 7 September is being touted for the next-generation iPhone, and this is the most likely to be released out of the two.

The only thing confirmed about the iPhone 5 is that it will feature iOS 5, syncing the device with iCloud, adding the iMessage service and enabling wireless updates.

In terms of hardware, the iPhone 5 is widely tipped to run the same A5 processor found in the iPad 2 and to support LTE and 1080p recording.

However, unlike the Google Nexus S, network operators noted that Apple has no plans to incorporate NFC into its devices at this time.

Francisco Jeronimo, research manager for European mobile devices at IDC, said that he would not be surprised to see Apple release the iPhone 5 at the end of this year.

“It would definitely make sense for Apple to launch the iPhone 5 in time for the Christmas season,” he added.

Reports also suggest that the iPad 3 could make an appearance before the year is out, and that the tablet will boast a resolution of 2,560×1,920 pixels, over five times greater than its predecessor.

“It could be possible to significantly boost the display as Samsung is making great strides in this area and supplies components to Apple,” Jeronimo said.

“The iPad 2 already boasts some significant upgrades and it isn’t necessary for Apple to launch the iPad 3 this year.”

A number of tablets are expected to be launched in the coming months, including the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.9 and RIM BlackBerry PlayBook which Jeronimo believes will be the main challengers to the iPad.
