Carriers seen testing iPhone 5 betas

Major phone carriers are reportedly beta testing the next generation of iPhone in preparation for a September launch.

The ChipHazard website reported that AT&T got a test version of the iPhone 5 on July 6. VerizonbizWatch , T-MobilebizWatch and SprintbizWatch are also rumored to be testing the smartphones.

The reports say that after testing is completed by the carriers, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) will turn the iPhone 5 over to its manufacturers to start production.

Reports about the next iPhone have been rampant since Apple passed up announcing it at the World Wide Developers Conference earlier this summer, when it had announced previous generations of the device. Instead that conference was all about software.

Piper JaffraybizWatch analyst Chris Larsen said this week that he believes the next generation on the device will be compatible with all wireless providers.

“While we remain uncertain regarding the next-generation iPhone’s specs and features, we believe the most noteworthy change could be the device’s ability to run on more networks, specifically Sprint and T-Mobile in the U.S, Larsen wrote.

Deutsche BankbizWatch analyst Chris Whitmore wrote earlier this summer that Apple will actually release two iPhones, an iPhone 5 with an array of new features and a cheaper version he dubbed the iPhone 4S.
