Apple to Overhaul IPhone, IPad

Apple is planning to “completely overhaul” several of its products, according to sources in the company’s supply chain, as rumors about new products begin to heat up once again.

The Cupertino, Calif.-based company will drastically change the iPad, iPhone, iMac and MacBook Air in 2012, according to a Digitimes report. Apple will release an iPad with minor updates in the beginning of next year and follow it up with the iPad 3 and a new iPhone in the fall.

The report of Apple’s major changes for next year is the first major speculation about the company’s product line since the release of the iPhone 4S. Several more reports are bound to surface between now and the eventual release of Apple’s next products, but there is little to suggest this report is based on anything other than speculation.

Of all the rumors in the report, the ones pertaining to the iPad seem the least likely. Apple may release a modified iPad 2 or even the iPad 3 with a thinner design and enhanced features early next year, but it would be uncharacteristic of the company to release two new tablets in a span of months. Apple typically updates their products on a yearly cycle and the iPad has thus far been no exception.

Other aspects of Digitimes’ speculation seem more likely.

Apple’s history would seem to indicate that 2012 will bring a redesigned iPhone. The company followed the 3GS with a body change to the iPhone 4, and the pattern will likely continue with the iPhone 5.

The MacBook Air also could be due for some changes. Apple has aggressively marketed the computer as the thinnest laptop on the planet, but its last update came in late 2010 and competitors have spent that time catching up. Late 2012 may be the perfect time for Apple to unveil and update one of its premiere laptops.

It’s always possible for Apple to break trends and take consumers by surprise, but it has followed a strict strategy when it comes new releases in recent years. Until the company breaks from its regular formula, a quick look at its history may be the best indication of its future.
