pple’s iPhone 4S was still Britain’s best-selling phone in the run-up to Christmas - beating off competition from Android rivals such as Galaxy S2, according to figures published yesterday by analysts GfK.
But the sheer number of different Android handsets has meant that the Android Facebook app has overtaken iPhone’s for the first time this month.
The number of daily users his 58.8 million this month for Android, versus 57.6 for the iPhone app, according to analysts Appdata.
It’s a worrying moment for iPhone - if popular apps such as Facebook become used more widely via Android, then developers may spend more time developing the Android version.
When Facebook rolled out its new timeline feature last week, the Android version was available for download shortly after the feature launched.
The iPhone version didn’t show up for several days.
This was probably down to Apple’s approval process - all apps in iTunes Store are signed off by Apple, whereas Google takes a more anything-goes policy in Android Market.
In terms of monthly users, iPhone is still in front - with nearly 100 million users compared to just over 80 for Android - but even on that slower-moving metric, Android is overtaking rapidly.

In the third quarter of 2011, Android phones accounted for 52.5 per cent of handsets worldwide, and iPhones just 15 per cent, according to analysts Gartner.
