Companies hope to fulfill iPhone orders by Lunar New Year

Taiwan’s three major telecoms operators are hoping to fulfill their pre-orders for Apple Inc’s iPhone 4S before the Lunar New Year, traditionally a high-demand period.

Chunghwa Telecom Co (中華電信), the country’s largest mobile provider, said yesterday that Apple’s shipments of the new device to Chunghwa during the past two weeks were “much more” than those of the iPhone 4 sold last year, with a total of 210,000 potential buyers signing up for Chunghwa’s services.

“We hope consumers with pre-order certificates will get their phones before the Lunar New Year, but it depends on Apple maintaining sufficient supply during this period,” Hu Hsueh-hai (胡學海), Chunghwa’s marketing managing director, said by telephone.

Since the three telecoms operators launched pre-order certificates earlier this month, about 480,000 consumers have signed up for the new phones — including 210,000 with Chunghwa, 150,000 with Taiwan Mobile Co (台灣大哥大) and 120,000 with Far EasTone Telecommunications Co (遠傳電信).

The three telecoms operators have so far sold 100,000 of the devices since Dec. 16, representing 20 percent of the total pre-orders, according to the reports.

Taiwan Mobile said it was selling the iPhone 4S in 350 chain and franchise stores — more than Chunghwa’s 230 stores — and the country’s No. 2 carrier also expects to meet the huge demand before the Jan. 21 to Jan. 29 Lunar New Year holiday.

Far EasTone, which is offering the iPhone 4S in more than 500 stores, also plans to fulfill its pre-orders before the Lunar New Year.
