US And Japan iPhone 6 Standings & China Lead-Times

I have been tracking lead-times for Apple’s iPhone 6 on various Apple country websites. I have also been following how the iPhone 6 is doing in Japan and Canaccord Genuity published information on Monday on how they are doing in the US. I have developed a Google Doc with the website lead-time information that also includes the iPhone 4S, 5, 5c and 5s when they were launched.

iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are the leading smartphones in the US

Mike Walkley, Canaccord Genuity’s Apple analyst, published a report that shows the iPhone 6 is the leading smartphone at AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile. In second and third place at all four carriers are the iPhone 6 Plus and 5s, respectively. Apple’s iPhone 6 and 6 Plus displaced Samsung’s Galaxy S5 which was in second place at all four carriers and LG’s G3 which was in third place at three carriers. Even the iPhone 5s at a $100 subsidized price is seeing strong demand and outselling any competitive smartphone

Walkley believes the combination of strong iPhone 6 and 6 Plus demand along with their supply constraints will keep sales strong through the March 2015 quarter. He also believes that with the larger screen sizes Apple could pick up meaningful market share.

The iPhone 6 is by far the best seller in Japan (but supply constraints could be holding the 6 Plus back)

BCN is a website that tracks sales of various consumer devices in Japan on a weekly and monthly basis. I have been following it off and on since December last year when Apple’s 5c and 5s were available and have been tracking the first three full weeks that the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have been sold in Japan starting on Friday, September 19.

Some of the key takeaways from the three weeks and month of September data are:

The iPhone 6 has held 9 of the top 25 positions all three weeks
The iPhone 6 has held at least the top 4 positions all three weeks
The iPhone 6 Plus has seen its number of top 25 positions go from 7 in the first week to 5 in the second and 3 in the third. Part of the reason may be supply constraints.
Both the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus held 16 of the top 25 positions in the first week (the 5s had 5 positions) going down to 14 in the second week and 12 in the third week.
The 16GB memory size has seen slightly more demand at 19 of the 49 iPhone’s (39%) having the lowest amount of memory.
Both the 64GB and 128GB memory versions were in 15 of the 49 iPhone’s or 31%.

At the bottom of this note are the details by week and for the month of September of what iPhone models, memory sizes and carriers were sold.

Apple’s China website has seen three models with longer lead-times

Apple started taking orders for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus last Friday, October 10, and reservations to pick them up in Apple’s stores started on Tuesday, October 14. The first day to receive one is this Friday, October 17.

I first checked Apple’s China website on Saturday, October 11, around midnight China time and found that the iPhone 6 lead-times were longer at 1-2 or 2-3 weeks vs. the rest of Apple’s country websites at 7-10 business days.

Interestingly after the first two days of ordering the 6 Plus had lead-times of 1-2 weeks (2 of the 16GB models), 2-3 weeks (remaining 16GB and all three 128GB models) and 3-4 weeks for the 64GB models. Overall these were shorter than the US and pretty much every other Apple country website.

When I checked late Tuesday night two of the iPhone 6 and one 6 Plus had lead-times lengthen to 2-3 weeks. Overall the iPhone 6 in China has longer lead-times than in the US but the 6 Plus remains shorter in China.
