What are the best iPhone 6 cases for drops?

The iPhone 6 is an outstanding smartphone, but it’s not exactly the most durable device on the market. Drops, scrapes, and even bending can drastically impact your resale value, and could potentially leave your iPhone in an inoperable state. If you want to protect your shiny new gadget, a heavy-duty case is exactly what you need.

Today, let’s take a look at four of the toughest cases currently available. None of these are extra-thin or particularly cheap, but if you’re rough on your electronics, you should definitely play it safe with one of these heavy-duty cases. After all, a little extra bulk is a lot more palatable than a shattered screen.

i-Blason Armorbox

i-Blason Armorbox

  • Price: $24.99
  • Colors: Black, Green, Blue, White, Pink

This case from i-Blason is designed specifically with drop protection in mind. The Armorbox combines an inner layer of flexible TPU (Thermoplastic polyurethane) and a harder polycarbonate shell to effectively shield your phone from drops and impacts. It comes with a built-in screen protector as well, so you can rest assured knowing that your device is safe from the everyday hazards our electronics face. At only $25, this case goes a long way towards protecting your expensive, slippery iPhone 6 from an untimely death.

Speck MightyShell

  • Price: $49.95
  • Colors: Black, Pink, Red, Purple, Clear

Thin, grippy, and resilient, this case from Speck has a lot to offer. The MightyShell case is marketed as “2x military-grade protection,” but all that really means is that this triple-layer case will help protect your iPhone 6 from everyday accidents like drops and scuffs. Even better? It’s only 4.57mm thick. That’s a far cry from the thinnest cases in existence, but the added durability and the textured bezel are well worth the small compromise in the bulk department.

Spigen Tough Armor

  • Price: $34.99
  • Colors: Black, Gold, Grey, Silver

Looking for something chic without skimping on toughness? Take a look at the Tough Armor case from Spigen. This elegant case is a looker, but don’t let that fool you. When it comes to protection, this case uses dual-layer shock absorption, and takes advantage of “air cushion corners” for added protection against bumps and drops. The Tough Armor is slim, sleek, and tough as nails. For my money, this is the case I would want to buy for my iPhone 6. This combination of style and protection resonates with me in a way other cases simply can’t match. Of course, that’s simply personal taste. Any of these cases will do well by you.

OtterBox Defender

OtterBox Defender

  • Price: $59.90
  • Colors: Black, Grey, Pink, Teal, Dark Purple, Blue, Light Purple, Dark Blue

OtterBox has a superb reputation for making excellent heavy-duty cases, and the iPhone 6 version of the Defender series case is no exception. This triple-layer case is designed to protect your $650 investment from wear and tear, and it doesn’t make any bones about it. This is a large, bulky, and relatively expensive case that’s only interested in keeping your iPhone 6 out of harm’s way. It’s not the thinnest, most stylish, or most affordable, but if you need to protect your phone from a rough and tumble lifestyle, the OtterBox Defender is exactly what you need.

Drop it like it’s hot

Infamously, the first iPhone 6 sold to consumers was immediately dropped onto the ground. Accidents happen, but they don’t have to empty your bank account if you plan ahead. Buy a case now, and save yourself from heartbreak later. These cases are cheaper than AppleCare, and a lot less of a hassle than repairing a broken phone. That said, if you have an extra $99 burning a hole in your pocket, a belt-and-suspenders pairing of a case and AppleCare isn’t a terrible idea. If you have a lifestyle that leads to many broken electronics, it’s probably a smart move.

If heavy-duty cases aren’t necessarily your style, there are plenty of other cases worth considering. If you’re a gym rat, I highlighted four terrific cases just a few weeks ago. Headed on a trip? Check out these handy cases instead. And of course, if drop protection isn’t a priority in your life, you could always buy an ultra-thin case. These cases offer a wide range of features with price tags ranging from $7 to $60, so there should be a little something for everyone.
