An Omaha business is asking for the public’s help catching two cellphone thieves caught on camera.
“These two guys come in the store, they’re just asking some questions about different devices,” iRepair store owner Hyle Erwin said. “Questions about what’s the most expensive phone we have.”
Surveillance video shows two young men walk into the store at 78th and Dodge streets. The men talk to a store employee for approximately 15 minutes. Once they had the cellphones in hand, they ran out.
Erwin said the phones are valued at $800 a piece, for a total loss of $1,600. He said the two men appear to be in their late teens or early 20s.
“(If) you’re going to spend $800 on a device, it’s not uncommon to look at it for 10, 15 minutes before you spend that kind of money,” Erwin said.
Erwin said he’s dealt with robberies in the past, which is why he’s installed high-quality cameras throughout the store. Erwin thinks the cameras got the thieves’ car license plate number.
“I went to go charge one phone and as I was coming back up, they bolted,” employee Cameron Parker said.
Parker and a second employee, Joey Holcomb, chased the thieves into the parking lot, following them to their car. Ultimately, the thieves got away.
“I just wanted to get our stuff back to be honest,” Holcomb said. “Kind of what my instinct is: get our stuff back.”
“I kind of gave them a pound on the window, that scared them a little bit,” Parker said. “There was nothing we could do after that, they were already booking it.”
“Yeah, it’s frustrating,” Erwin said. “But in this case, it’s more relief because they didn’t use any kind of weapon or anything like that. No one got hurt.”
