Apple’s rumored October 16 event is approaching on the horizon, and so far we’ve heard relatively little about what might be unveiled. We have heard that updated iMacs are likely on the way, however, as well as a new iPad Air. The Air sequel is said to be thinner and lighter, according to existing rumors, and now Vietnamese blog Tinhte.vn (via 9to5Mac) is showing off pictures of what it claims is the next generation of the Apple tablet.
Last year, both the iPad Air and Retina iPad mini used nearly the same A7 chip that you saw in the iPhone 5s. That wasn’t exactly a problem, but it was a bit disappointing if you were hoping for some extra oomph in bigger iOS devices. You may not have to worry about getting similar parts this year, though. Taiwanese site Apple.club.tw has posted photos that reportedly show the next big iPad’s motherboard, including what looks like a shiny new A8X processor.
When Apple (AAPL) unveils its latest iPad and iPad mini later this month, the Internet will not explode, as it did when the company launched new iPhones last month. That’s fair enough. The iPhone is Apple’s benchmark product. It accounts for half the company’s revenue. It commands more news coverage than any other mobile device. It’s Hannah’s phone on Girls.
Investors, however, should not ignore the iPad. The device is a critical piece of Apple’s business, and the company’s fortunes hinge largely on the success of the latest models.
